We agreed further (Appendix B) on the number of trains

per diem and on the division of rolling-stock. In connection

with rolling-stook Mr Chao handed us the attached suggestion

(Appendix F) which we accepted as reasonable subject to check-

ing the figures and more particularly the suggestion of 10

cents per coach hired. We also (Appendix E) proposed certain

arrangements with regard to goods and passenger-traffic and

locomotives at Shamchun. These arrangemente Mr Chao accepted.

We also agreed on periodical joint-inspection and on the method

of booking through Tickets by local trains: and at the request

made by Mr Chao at the instance of the Gov General we inserted

a clause as to suspending traffic in case of political emer-

gency.

Finally I handed Mr Chao a note prepared by Mr Lindsey

on the subject of goods traffic and terminal charges (Appendix

G). This Mr Chao agreed to consider carefully.

Before parting we decided to meet again as soon as possi-

ble, when the revised agreement had been put into proper shape and approved of by the Board of Communications and the Governor

of Hongkong: and we congratulated each other on having at last

made substantial progress with the Agreement.

Mr Chao informed us incidentally :-

(a) that the Chinese section had had much trouble owing to

cuttings and banks slipping as the result of the recent heavy

rainstorms, The Chinese section would not probably be able to

open for through traffic till September next,

(b) that the telegraph lines on the Chinese section had bean

extended beyond Sheklung to Shong-p'eng and would be continued

as far as ShamChun. He agreed to make inquiries za to the inten-

tention of the Board of Communications in the matter of the com-

mercial use of the line,

(c) that the survey of the connecting line between the Kowboon
